Hyperspace...the final frontier. These are the voyag—whoops, wrong universe. We humbly apologize for the inconvenience. Let's start again.
Hyperspace was a Σ-dimensional non-Euclidian Minkowski matrix coexisting and coterminal with realspace, with limited interaction on the level of substrings and strange quarkions. Starships equipped with hyperdrives entered hyperspace by releasing gamma radiation, rippling the local space-time continuum, while a null quantum field surrounding the hull helped stabilize the vessel to prevent standard zero-point vacuum fluctuations from hypercurving back into realspace for the duration of the journey.
Large gravitational influences, from stars, planets, or even large moons, interfered with the transition to hyperspace, not because they altered the local continuum (no, of course not, that would be silly) but only because they overcame the feeble hyperdrive's gamma-generated ripples. After all, if hyperdrives were as strong disturbances in space-time as planets and stars, why, we'd all be living in multidimensional limbo with time passing at random, and effects preceding causes half the time, and the speed of light changing with the wind (sometimes people would bump into you because they were running faster than the speed of light and couldn't see you until seconds after it happened).
Do you follow? Now, transitions from hyperspace to realspace and vice-versa created wake rotation and Cronau radiation, which was a signature form of energy that mimicked electromagnetic radiation, but was in fact only the three-dimensional shadow of the Σ-dimensional surface tension being punctured at three simultaneous right angles by the ship's entry/exit point.
