Assuming the Republic was founded at 28,000 BBY. Well, before that, the Republic was nothing more than a speck of dust to the Sith Empire. The good guys built this federation to battle the forces of evil. Evil was referred to as an act of evil. They were not Sith, no. Evil was.... well, bad, that's for sure. Then after that, they became evil.

Then few wars broke out. Then the Jedi placed it back into peace. After many years, maybe 20,000 years later, the Battle of Yavin took place.
