The Maw referred to an inordinately-large cluster of black holes, located near the spice-producing planetoid of Kessel. There were so many interstellar deathtraps in the cluster, that it was theorized that some ancient force {not to be confused with the Force) had gathered the various phenomena from throughout the rest of the galaxy.

Because of the nature of black holes, the Maw proved to be a handy place to dispose of one's garbage, whether the refuse in question consisted of annoying Sith Lords, out-of-control Star Destroyers, or superweapons you didn't want the other guys to get hold of (making it the ultimate in safety-deposit boxes). Kyp Durron partially redeemed himself by making sure the Sun Crusher was deposited safely into the Maw.

The Galactic Empire, naturally enough, parked one of its many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many secret bases and research facilities at the calm center of the anomaly. It was here that the Death Star, and other Imperial penis compensators weapons of mass PWN4G3, were born and raised.

Behind the scenesEdit

Apparently, George Lucas's minions are now attempting to solve the mystery of the Maw, saying that it was created to imprison some ancient evil thing-a-ma-jig that makes Darth Nihilus look like a cute and cuddly kitten.
